Context

In a nuclear reactor, in the event of a severe accident involving core meltdown, loss of cooling causes the fuel and surrounding materials to heat up, forming a complex mixture of solid and liquid phases known as “corium”.

Suitable Mitigation Measures

Improve the physico-chemical characterisation of corium, whether in-vessel or ex-vessel, in order to better understand the conditions under which it forms, how it spreads, and its reactivity with water during cooling phases.
